A children's bike often has to endure a lot. Children have adventures and that leaves its mark on the bike. Fortunately, wear and tear does not mean the end of the bike. A children's bike can be perfectly restored! Upcycling a bike is a careful process that requires attention and craftsmanship.

Step-by-step plan for upcycling children's bicycles

Co-founder Casparis explains that safety always comes first for us. For that reason, we have built fixed steps and checks into our process. Each bike is checked at four different moments before it reaches a customer.

Step 1: Check using checklist

It all starts with the first mechanic. He checks the bike completely using a checklist. This way we make sure that every part is checked and nothing is missed. If everything is in order, the bike is prepared for a test ride.

Step 2: Take a test drive

Then a second mechanic takes over. He or she also carefully goes through the checklist again and makes a test ride to see if the bike functions properly. If one of our mechanics can ride the children's bike safely, then you can be sure that your child will be able to do so too!

Step 3: Take photos and post them on the website

When the bike is approved by the second mechanic, the bike is ready to be photographed! Our photographer also looks at the bikes and also pays extra attention to the appearance of the bikes. If she is also satisfied with the result, she takes a picture of all the bikes and they are ready to go on the website.

Step 4: A final check

The final check takes place when the bike goes from the photo location to our stock. With that, we have checked at four moments whether the bike is completely ready for shipping. This way we can guarantee that every BikeFlip children's bike is safe, beautiful and reliable!

What if a bicycle is too bad to upcycle?

Sometimes we receive bikes that are in such a bad condition that we can no longer safely repair them. Think of broken frames, bent forks or seat posts that are rusted. In those cases we consciously choose not to put the bike back on the road.

But even then we don't just throw the bike away. We can often reuse half of the parts for other bikes. In this way we ensure that these materials also get a second life. Even though the cycle ends for that specific bike, its parts can still last for years!

BikeFlip is all about safety, quality and sustainability

Each bike goes through a careful process in which multiple mechanics check the bike. Only bikes that meet all our requirements end up in our webshop. And even bikes that are no longer safe are reused as much as possible. In this way, we ensure that your child can cycle with peace of mind and we contribute to a more sustainable world.
