About us
In 2019, there was a completely intact bright pink children's bicycle among the scrap metal on the environmental street in Utrecht. Determined to save this 'discarded gem', one of our founders, Casparis Beyer, fished out the bike.
Thus the seed for BikeFlip was planted. What started as a study assignment during Casparis' master's degree in Sustainable Business and Innovation at the University of Utrecht, quickly grew into a company with great ambitions.
BikeFlip launched
A year after BikeFlip started, university friend Paul Remie joined as a partner, and the company started to take on a more serious form. The start-up is located in Utrecht and is rapidly expanding to offer its services in more and more places in the Netherlands. Check here where that currently is! Don't be disheartened if your hometown is not yet listed, as in the coming years, parents and children across the rest of the Netherlands will also get to know the children's bike subscription.
The issue
From a sustainability and circularity perspective
→ 3.8 million bicycles are unused in sheds.
→ Children outgrow their bikes approximately every 1.5 years.
From an efficiency perspective
→ Every year, 1 million new bicycles are purchased, which is associated with emissions, environmental pollution, potentially poor working conditions, and depletion of raw materials.
From a social & societal perspective
→ In 2023, 1.5 million people in the Netherlands had a disadvantage in the labor market.

With BikeFlip, you have options. Choose from a wide range of children's bikes. Every time your child outgrows their bike and needs a new one (flip), it feels like you're getting a brand new bike!
Remedying mobility poverty in disadvantaged neighborhoods
BikeFlip not only offers (children's) bike subscriptions but also refurbishes bikes for social projects. In collaboration with municipalities, these bikes are made available to, for example, refugees or families in financial vulnerability.
The solution to the mismatch in the labor market for technical staff
BikeFlips' "social" workshop upcycles bicycles while simultaneously offering people with a disadvantage in the labor market the opportunity to learn and integrate. This provides a diverse group of people from different backgrounds with the chance to progress to a good (paid) job.
