Step-by-step taillight battery replacement

There are two main types of taillights on children's bikes. Here's how to tackle them.

What you need

To replace the batteries in your bike's taillight, you will need:

  • New batteries
  • A Phillips head screwdriver

Type A: With screws (often on the luggage rack)

  1. Unscrew: There are usually two small screws on the front (the red lens). Loosen these with a Phillips head screwdriver.
  2. Remove cover: Take off the red cover. Make sure the rubber sealing edge does not fall off; this ensures the light remains waterproof.
  3. Replace: Replace the batteries (usually 2x AA or AAA).
  4. Reinstall: Put the rubber back in place, put the cover on, and hand-tighten the screws.

Type B: Click system (often on the fender or seat post)

  1. Find the notch: Look for a small slot on the bottom or side of the light.
  2. Pry open: Insert a flat-head screwdriver or a coin into the slot and carefully twist until the housing pops open.
  3. Replace battery: With this type, you often see a flat coin cell battery (like the CR2032). Slide it out and insert the new one with the text facing up.
  4. Click closed: Press the two parts of the light back together until you hear a clear click.

Tip

Pay close attention to how the batteries are placed in the bike's taillight, otherwise the light will not work.

Also check the mounting

While you're working on the taillight: check immediately if the light is still securely attached. Due to vibrations, the bolts that connect the taillight to the carrier can sometimes loosen.
